About ABCE

Our Goal

The organization ABCE was founded in 2019 in response to the dramatic decline of intact highland habitats including montane forests due to poor management and lack of funding. ABCE is dedicated to conserving Ethiopia´s wildlife and remaining wild highland areas, while maintaining a strong focus on economic development and poverty alleviation of surrounding communities to ensure that the conservation areas are ecologically, socially, and financially sustainable in the long-term.

Our Strategy

ABCE seeks to deepen engagement with researchers as much of the Ethiopian ecoregion is largely unknown to science. By allocating support to local communities like bee-keeping or planting apple trees in buffer areas, tangible benefits for people linked to the reserve will help to sustain its biological integrity on the long run. The organization also links up to travelers, guides and tour operators.  Through bespoke trave l opportunities, ABCE will share its know-how and allow philanthropic travelers to experience a behind-the-scenes view of the challenges of protected areas management.

About us

ABCE is an Ethiopian NGO supported internationally by partners. The founders have a long track record of conservation experiences on international level.

Dr. Anagaw Atickem

Anagaw is a biologist focused on mammal zoology. He worked many years as researcher on rare African species like lions, elephants and Ethiopian endemics and was granted several scholarships abroad, mainly in Europe and USA. Today he co-supervises international and national PhD students at the University of Addis Abeba on their research. He has followed the decline of Ethiopian wildlife first hand and teamed up with Wolde to make a change for the better.

Woldemedhin Zebene

Wolde grew up in the afromontane zone of Ethiopia and studied natural resource management with focus on forests and watershed conservation. He worked for several international conservation agencies as coordinator and senior manager like the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Program. He is truly dedicated to participatory conservation approaches, like it has always been the case in his home area, on the Guassa plateau.
